Welcome!
Researchers at Queen’s University of Kingston, Ontario, Canada and the Sri Ramasamy Memorial (SRM) University of Tamil Nadu, India are working to address global issues in the area of population and public health. Our main objective is to extend the benefits of evidence-based research by creating a new information system that will enable the development of informed and appropriate interventions aimed at reducing the burden of communicable diseases in Tamil Nadu.
In rural India, populations are vulnerable to communicable disease due to poor sanitation and hygiene, unsafe water, and the effects of poverty such as overcrowding and poor nutrition. Many regions lack the capacity to collect the epidemiological and environmental population data necessary to understanding the complex causes and confounders of population health. We plan to launch a pilot project to build a Queen’s – SRM Regional Population Health Registry (QS-RPHR) to develop regional capacity for data collection and analysis, to monitor community health over time, place and space, and link trends to individual and household demography, health behaviors and environmental risks. This will also enable regional surveillance of pathogens, building “early-warning” capability by tracking transmission dynamics of disease outbreaks.
Our goals are to determine the best methodology to expand the deployment of the RPHR to the district level, and to demonstrate the capacity to reduce morbidity and mortality in vulnerable populations by designing effective interventions based on specialized local knowledge of communicable disease trends, health behaviors and environmental risks. We can build mutual capacity by employing a trans-disciplinary, multicultural approach to problem solving in the area of in population and public health, and developing knowledge and technology transfer that is sustainable, accessible, and transferable to other regions, in India, Canada and the world.
